Day 3: Chicago: Animal Collective

hi folks,

Doug and I took it slow today -- slow morning during which we drank coffee and Justin played the piano and sang, slow brunch at a local breakfast nook (where we tired strawberry orange juice for the first time), followed by a later trip into the city. We took a bus to the Lincoln Park Zoo, mostly because it was free. While we have a love-hate relationship with zoos (we will always want the animals to be free and in their own habitats), we can't help but be a bit entertained when all these animals are in one place and we can see them without financially supporting their prisons. Particularly amused by the Armadillo and the Serval. There was also a camel whose hump was bent over and kind of floppy, which was a little alarming. Does anyone know anything about camels and their humps? Is this really alarming? All in all, though, it was the perfect fall day to wander around a semi-natural space in Chicago and take it easy.

After the zoo, we headed downtown and stumbled upon a burrito place that promised burritos the size of our heads. Doug was pretty stoked about this, so we tried it out. His rating? Pretty average. We already forgot the name.

Chicago is really growing on me -- the pace and energy remind me of New York City, which makes this another prime place for people-watching and chance (?) encounters.

We got back to Algonquin at around 8:30 and Justin gave Doug a haircut. Then we watched a movie that turned out to be less than wonderful, so I'm not even going to talk about it.

Reading over this post makes me think that today wasn't really that great, but quite the opposite! I was glad our energy levels matched and we could take it slow. Tomorrow (but really today because I didn't finish this post last night) is going to be another fun one!

cheers!
